A large part of the work a CRM Archaeologist does is survey. Spaced 50ft apart, the archaeologist digs a series of holes approximately 35-40cm in diameter down into the sterile sub-soil. The archaeologist screens for artifacts and makes careful notes of the soil levels, called strata, measuring depth, soil color and texture. Doing a large, random sample of STPs in an area can give an archaeologist an idea of what cultural material might be in the soil.
